About:
Machinal
By Sophie Treadwell
Directed by Dora Arreola
Presented by The Lily Foundation
A USF Theatre Production
A young woman does everything she is told to do to succeed in 1920s America. Only too late does she stop to ask who she is and what she wants, leading to a shocking tragic conclusion. A masterpiece of classic American Expressionist theatre.

About the Roles:
Young Woman (Helen) A young woman who initially lives with her mother and works for a wealthy businessman named George H. Jones. Helen is characterized as “soft” and “tender,” a person unfit for the hard “mechanical” world she lives in.
Husband (George) A successful businessman who falls in love with Helen and asks her to marry him. George is a simple man obsessed with making money and prospering in a straightforward, capitalist fashion.
Mother An old woman primarily concerned with her daughter’s (Helen’s) wellbeing and financial stability. Because of this preoccupation, she encourages Helen to marry George, who she argues must be a good man because he is the vice-president of the company
Mr. Roe Helen’s secret lover, whom she meets in a speakeasy shortly after giving birth to George’s child. When Helen’s coworker, the telephone girl, takes her to the speakeasy, the two young lovers quickly make a connection
Telephone Girl One of Helen’s coworkers in George’s office. Chipper and young, the unnamed telephone girl takes Helen with her to a speakeasy to meet Mr. Roe.
Adding Clerk One of Helen’s coworkers in George’s office. The unnamed adding clerk is accustomed to office life, a dull and sardonic man who, along with the other office workers, speculates aloud about Helen’s engagement to Mr. Jones.
Filing Clerk The Filing Clerk. An immature adolescent boy who works in George's office with Helen and the rest of her colleagues
Stenographer The unnamed stenographer—who works in George’s office—is proper and judgmental, clearly looking down on Helen for arriving late to work.
Doctor and a Men at the speakeasy The doctor and overseeing Helen’s health after she gives birth.
Nurse and The Woman at the speakeasy Helen’s nurse after she gives birth to her and George’s child. Though she wants to help Helen, the nurse recognizes Helen lack of agency when it comes to her own life and health.
Defense Lawyer and Prosecutor The lawyer who cross-examines Helen when she’s on trial for murder. The Lawyer for Prosecution easily unearths the flaws in Helen’s story about the night George died.

AUDITIONS INFORMATION
Initial Auditions for this production will occur in two ways:
There will be auditions through video, due on November 29 at 11:59 pm, and Callbacks on Wednesday Dec 3rd
or
Auditions In-person, on Tuesday Dec 2nd from 6 pm-10 pm, and Callbacks on Wednesday Dec 3rd, 6 pm-10 pm.

Option 1 = VIDEO AUDITION:
Submissions of videos will be open until 11:29 pm on November 29th.
Please prepare a video audition framed in Medium-Closeup (just above the head to mid-torso or ribs), landscape, and straight-on. The audition should include a slate and a 1-minute comedic monologue in prose. Pick a monologue you believe embodies the character you are most interested in playing in Machinal. See below for the character breakdowns.
You will also be asked to upload a headshot (a simple selfie will suffice).
Option 2 - IN-PERSON AUDITIONS:
Please prepare a 1-minute contemporary monologue, either comedic or dramatic in nature, that you feel connects you to a character in the play.
Please arrive in the Theatre Building - TAR - for the auditions to start at 6pm and be prepared to stay until released.
If you have conflicts with the in-person audition date, we encourage you to audition via video instead.
IN-PERSON CALLBACKS
Callbacks for both Video and In-Person Audition Submissions will be Wednesday Dec 3rd from 6-10pm in TAR 130.
For callbacks, you will be reading sides from the script.
You will receive an email from USF Theatre by 11:00 p.m. on TUESDAY DEC 2nd with callback information. If you do not receive an email by this time, please feel free to reach out to Sadie Lehmker at theatredance@usf.edu
Those called back will be assigned a 1.5-hour block of time the afternoon/evening and will need to stay for the entire callback time they are assigned.
Please list conflicts for Dec 3, 6:00 – 10:00 pm, on the audition submission form.
Not receiving a callback does not necessarily indicate that you are not being considered for casting.
