PlaceMattersSP: Exploring Florida's Historic African American Homes

Author and public historian Jada Wright-Greene invites audiences to discover the legacy of Black Floridians through the lens of historic homes.

Drawing from her acclaimed book Florida’s Historic African American Homes, Wright-Greene highlights residences that were more than just places to live—they were hubs of education, entrepreneurship, politics, and cultural life.

From Mary McLeod Bethune’s home in Daytona Beach to community landmarks across the state, these sites preserve the stories of resilience, achievement, and leadership that helped shape Florida’s history.

Wright-Greene’s engaging presentation underscores the critical importance of preservation, showing how safeguarding these homes ensures that future generations can continue to learn from and be inspired by them. This program offers a deeper view of Florida’s past.
