About Us
The mission of Health Buddies at USF is to support the Seniors in Service Health Buddies program by recruiting new Health Buddies to empower older adults in managing their chronic conditions. In this role, we also aim to build a community of students who share a commitment to this goal by hosting regular social and service events for member engagement. Health Buddies help combat loneliness and reduce preventable hospital readmissions for individuals living with chronic conditions. Through regular telephone communication, volunteer Health Buddies help to reduce stress and anxiety while empowering individuals to self-manage their health. The program has a built-in 12-week framework in partnership with Seniors in Service, and volunteers are welcome to continue a relationship with their buddy beyond the 12 weeks. Volunteers are screened and receive trainings to provide support to help individuals live independently, with dignity. Health Buddies do not provide medical care; they will receive training for basic knowledge of managing chronic conditions, ultimately making a difference in the lives of medically vulnerable individuals.
