Hi [FIRST_NAME],
This Friday, November 8th, at CMC120 from 2-3pm, Andrew Mcgaha will be giving a talk titled Rebellions Against Standard Analysis: How they falter and why they're still worthwhile. Andrew is a really fascinating speaker and listening to him is very exhilarating. I highly encourage going to this talk and witnessing just how captivating Andrew is. Below is the abstract.
Rebellions Against Standard Analysis: How they falter and why they’re still worthwhile.
Abstract: The study of calculus can largely be summarized as the study of distance and the nature of approach. In this talk, we will venture through the history of this subject and look at a number of differing nonstandard approaches to the subject: Newton and Leibniz’s calculi of fluxions and differentials, Abel Robinson’s nonstandard analysis, integer analysis, rational analysis, and surreal analysis. We will look at the limitations and benefits of these systems to see that these systems work best when appreciated together.
Prerequisite Knowledge: Introductory Calculus (Calculus 1 level)
On another note, welcome to all our new members that joined from the Bulls Nite Out: Friday Tabling! We are so excited to have you and hope we can give you a space to show your appreciation for mathematics and meet others with the same interests.
If you would like to attend this talk, please register for the event on BullsConnect using the link provided. As always, if you have any questions or are interested in giving a talk, please e-mail me. We look forward to seeing you tomorrow!
Sincerely,
Alejandra Paris
